PhD. candidate Tran Thi Tam successfully defended online doctoral thesis

(BAFU) – On March 15, 2021, PhD. candidate Tran Thi Tam successfully defended her doctoral thesis titled “STUDY ON GASTROINTESTINAL HELTHMINTH INFECTION AND MONEZIOSIS CAUSED BY Moniezia spp. IN GOATS IN BAC GIANG PROVINCE, PREVENTION AND TREAIMENT OF THE DISEASE”, at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF). Her thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Lan and Dr. Phan Thi Hong Phuc.

PhD. candidate Tran Thi Tam presented the thesis in brief to the Committee

THE NEW SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS

– 8 species of gastrointestinal helminths have been detected including Fasciola giganticaParamphistomum cerviEurytrema pancreaticum,

Moniezia expansaStrongyloides papillosusHaemonchus spp., Oesophagostomum spp. and Trichocephalus spp..

– Moniezia expansa tapeworm species is Identified by morphological and molecular biology techniques.

– 9 species of soil mites – intermediate hosts of parasitic Moniezia expansa tapeworm in goats in Bac Giang province including: Allozetes pusillusLamellobates ocularisScheloribates fimbriatusScheloribates mahunkaiScheloribates praeincisusProtoribates (Xylobates) paracapucinusAcrogalumna ventralisGalumna flabellifera orientalis and Pergalumna margaritata have been identified.

– Epidemiological mapping of the endemic tapeworm infection in goat herds in the studied places in Bac Giang province has been developed.

– The time period to complete the life cycle of the tapeworm in the goat’s body is determined as 47 – 48 days.

– The pathological, and clinical manifestation of goats infected with Moniezia expansa tapeworm is Identified.

– Efficacy and safety of three treatment regimens in treating of tapeworm infection in goats have been determined: Praziquantel at dosage of 15 mg/kg body weight (a singgle dose) and decoction pomegranate stem bark 10 – 15 g/goat/day in combination with saline laxative – MgSO4 at dosage of 50 g/goat (a single dose) is safely and effectively administered against tapeworm infection with 94.51 – 90.27% efficacy.

– Recommendation of prevention and control measure for tapeworm infection in goats has been developed including 6 main contents.

PRACTICAL APPLICABILITY AND THE NEEDS FOR FURTHER STUDIES

* Practical applicability

– Typical symptoms and lesions of goats infected with tapeworm Moniezia expansa have been Identified. Effective prevention and treatment measures of the infection have been developed. This is a sicentific basis for veterinarians and goat producers to rely on for early diagnosis (by clinical symptoms observation) to prevent and treat the disease immediately and effectively.

– The preventiion and treatment of tapeworm infection are applied effevtively so that it can help goat producer to limit the prevalence of tapeworm infection in goats and damage caused by tapeworm.

– The finding of the dissertation are references valuable in training, scientific research in Universities and colleges.

* Open tissues for further studies:

– Study on the biological characteristics of Moniezia expansa tapeworm larvae, prevention and control measures of the intermediate host of tapeworms should continue to conduct, on the basis of this finding to recommend goat producer to prevent tapeworm infection in goats more effectively.
