In recent years, Dong Trieu town (Quang Ninh) has become an active locality in agricultural development towards modernity and sustainability. Currently, many households, businesses, and cooperatives in the town have caught up with the digital transformation process and applied scientific and technological advances in production and business activities.

The model of growing grapes in a greenhouse by Mr. Pham Huy Cuong (Ba Xa hamlet, An Sinh commune) is an example. Mr. Cuong has boldly invested hundreds of millions of dongs to build a model for growing Ha Den grapes in his homeland.

Ha Den grapes, a grape variety successfully researched by Bac Giang Agriculture and Forestry University (BAFU), can be grown in the Northern provinces. Each seedling costs VND 65,000. Mr. Pham Huy Cuong has planted about 500 vines on an area of 1,500 m2 since the beginning of 2022. After more than one year, the vines have given the first harvest crop, with a yield of 1 ton of fruits.

According to Mr. Cuong’s sharing, in the past, due to the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, his family’s business services and event organization were stagnant, while vegetable gardens were also not highly effective. Therefore, he did online research on Bac Giang’s model of growing Ha Den grapes. Up to now, the vineyard has been harvested and is initially effective, and his family plans to invest to expand the area for growing grapes.

Ha Den grapes are a bare-root variety, so they have durable vitality and a very fast growth rate. However, it is difficult for grapes to flower and fruit naturally, which must be handled with strict technical requirements. The vines are relatively sensitive to weather and climate. Especially, they are often damaged by many pests and diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to build a greenhouse to shelter from rain, sun, cold, and frost and prevent pests and diseases at the right time and dose.

Talking about the grape care process, Mr. Cuong said that from the beginning, he was dedicatedly guided by BAFU’s agricultural engineers, from pruning plants to installing drip irrigation systems according to Israeli technology. In addition, to supplement nutrients for the vines to grow well and produce sweet fruits, Mr. Cuong used organic fertilizers to fertilize the plants. To prevent pests and diseases, especially leaf-miners, he mixed biological products such as garlic and chili juice to spray regularly on leaves.

“The previous day, when seeing my garden crowded with people to buy grapes, the food hygiene safety inspection delegation came in to check, and the result was that the product was evaluated as safe for consumers. I felt very happy when my care efforts over the past year paid off well. The evidence is that wherever grapes are harvested, people and traders buy them all. With a selling price of VND 120,000/kg at the garden, the last grape crop also gave my family an income of more than VND 100 million,” said Mr. Cuong.

According to Mr. Cuong, in the coming time, he will expand the vineyard to 2,000 m2, build a model of a vineyard combining experience tourism to attract more tourists, and contribute to the development of agricultural tourism and eco-tourism at the locality.

As a key agricultural area of Quang Ninh province, in the past years, Dong Trieu town has restructured the agriculture sector in the directions of adding value, developing sustainably, and gradually forming models of urban agriculture towards high technology.

In addition, the development of agriculture combined with tourism is also a new direction that brings high efficiency. The localities in Quang Ninh province in general and in Dong Trieu town in particular have created attractive models such as country farm tourism, experiencing the activity of being a farmer, experiencing local people’s daily lives, jobs, cuisine, etc.

Currently, Dong Trieu town focuses on comprehensive digital transformation in the field of agriculture towards high technology and smart agriculture; agricultural management based on digital technology; and building a digital data platform for industry management.

Accordingly, the application of digital technology to automate production and business processes, management and supervision, traceability of agricultural products and product supply chains, and agricultural e-commerce development focuses on key OCOP products. The products are listed on the province’s two e-commerce trading floors, namely Posmart and Vostro, and the town’s e-commerce trading floor (dongtrieumart.vn).
