The Red Peanut variety BAFU.N01: Drought-tolerant peanut variety for farmers in the northern midland and mountainous provinces

(BAFU) – In the context of increasingly complex climate change, research and development of plant varieties that can adapt to to harsh conditions is extremely necessary. In response to this need, a research team led by MSc. Phung Duy Hieu at Bac Giang Agriculture and Forestry University (BAFU) has succeeded in breeding the red peanut variety – BAFU.N01. This achievement is the result of  a ministerial-level research project for the period 2021-2025, and coordination with the Bean Research Center and the Plant Resources Center.

Cultivation and usage value: The red peanut variety – BAFU.N01 stands out with its strong growth and wide adaptability to adverse conditions, particularly in hot environments. This helps farmers feel more secure when facing weather fluctuations. The red peanut variety with semi-upright form, BAFU.N01 has a growing period of 115 – 125 days in the spring crop and 105 – 110 days in the fall – winter crop. This optimizes the cultivation and harvesting time, resulting in high economic efficiency.

Yield: This peanut variety achieves an average yield of 2.9–3.2 tons/ha, an impressive figure compared to current red peanut varieties. Characteristics of Red Peanut – BAFU.N01: The pods have very shallow constrictions, with an average number of seeds per pod. Over 50% of the pods contain two or more seeds. The seed coat is red, with a kernel/pod ratio of 65–75%, and 30% of the pods contain three seeds. Notably, this variety shows moderate resistance to leaf spot diseases and excellent resistance to rust disease.
